History of Xoloitzcuintle

     Mexican Hairless dog is one of the oldest breeds of dogs that exist today in their original form. The origins of the first Xolo went far before our era in the times of Antiquity. The skulls of these dogs found in Mexico are more than 3,300 years. Quite rightly Xoloitzcuintle can be called the first dog of America.

     The word "Xoloitzcuintle" has many possible translations: "God," "slave", "conductor to the afterlife". Another name for the breed is a complex word in the language of ancient Aztec Nahuatl, which consists of two parts "Xolo" and "itzkuintli." "Xolo" comes from the Aztec god Xolotl. On ancient paintings the god Xolotl depicted as ugly dog with his hands and feet. The word "itzkuintli" on Nahuatl (the Aztec language) is translated as "dog." Consequently, "Xoloitzcuintle" means "dog of the god Xolotl."

     It was believed that the Xolo is a conductor of souls to the Land of Spirits.

     There was the custom at the funeral to kill one of these dogs with an arrow in her mouth and bury the remains, together with the remains of a man. The Indians believed that after death only due to the dog soul of the deceased will be able to cross the river, which is an obstacle on the way to paradise.

     In the Mexican state of Colima graves were found with the figurines of dogs are made of red clay, together with clay objects (dishes, etc..). These findings are dated period of 200 - 900 years BC, is a caricature of short and fat dogs, which "dogs of Colima" is now called. Collection of these figurines is in the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City.

     Xolos were also used as a food source in Central America. The Indians believed that eating meat Mexican naked, they get some kind of spiritual protection. Dogs were considered a great delicacy and eaten at the sacrificial rites, marriage ceremonies and funerals. Particular importance was attached to different colors Xolo, and therefore in accordance with a ritual or ceremony were selected certain dogs.

     There are three breed sizes: miniature, mediate and standard. They all come in two varieties: hairless and coated.

       Dimensions (height and weight):

       • small: 25-35 cm at the withers, 2-5,5 kg;
       • average: 35-45 cm at the withers, 6-15 kg;
       • standard: 45-60 cm at the withers, 16-34 kg.


     Xolo is very clever sensitive breed. They are easily trained, so the win in a wide variety of canine activities, including obedience and agility. Temperament of Mexican naked dog can be attributed to the typical working breed: reserved, self-respecting and cautious with strangers, but at the same time passionately devoted to their owners. By nature, large Xolo are owners to anything that they consider their own, be it food, toys, bed or their owners.

     They are known for their exceptional guard dog capacity. When this ability is called into action, Xolo show fearless decisiveness, defending their territory. Adult specimens can sometimes be aggressive towards other dogs and usually do not back down.  

Features of breed

     Having experienced the 3000-year-old breeding selection, Mexican Hairless Dog was formed as a separate breed, which kept its original natural appearance.
     Xolos are highly resistant to the usual canine diseases and genetic defects. Average duration of a naked dog's life is 12-15 years.

       You can stand out from the breed characteristics are as follows:

       Xolo requires tactile contact with the owner.

     Training of Mexican Hairless Dog

     Medium and miniature species of breed most often the companions, they need only knowledge of the rules of behavior in society. Standard species of breed can be an excellent a guard, having passed the relevant course of training.

Living Conditions


     Nutrition Xolo should be organized in accordance with the general rules of feeding dogs. They must complete and balanced meals with plenty of protein.

     Xolo is considered to be a vegetarian - with pleasure eat vegetables (cabbage, carrots, pumpkins), fruits (hurma, apples, bananas), berries (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries). But they do not refuse to eat meat as well. Also in the diet should be dairy products (cheese, sour cream, yogurt, milk).

If you choose to feed your dog dry food, it is advisable to soak it in some water at room temperature. Usually Xolo have got little teeth, it can be difficult to absorb the large pieces of food. Then it is necessary to grind the food or feed your dog canned food. Make sure that the food contains enough calcium to strengthen the dog's teeth and bones.

       Mexican Hairless Dog is well adaptable breed. Xoloitzcuintle feel great in our cold winters, running over the snow without clothes in freezing temperatures, and in the hot summer days. However, in winter at t-25C ~ t-15C walking outdoors without clothes should not exceed 10-15 minutes. Well, if you are in a warm suit, then walk adjust yourself for pet activity. In the hot sun, when other dogs are looking for a cool place, they take a sunbath. Xolo survived millennia often under adverse, hostile conditions, and it proves once again their great endurance.

       One of the most charming aspects of life with Mexican Hairless Dog is the fact that the skin of a dog is constantly changing color. In winter, even heavily pigmented dogs completely fade away, with the advent of the sun with their pale color darkens. The spotted species appears curlicue. Quite a few hours of sunshine, the color continue to change over the following days. However, a particularly bright Xolo is undesirable to be on the sun a lot of time (may be due to burning).
       Dog skin requires special care. The best preventive maintenance of colds for Xolo become tempering and physical activity.
